Anyone who wants to know the human psyche will learn next to nothing from experimental psychology.  He would be better advised to abandon exact science, put away his scholar's gown, bid farewell to his study, and wander with human heart throught the world.  There in the horrors of prisons, lunatic asylums and hospitals, in drab suburban pubs, in brothels and gambling-hells, in the salons of the elegant, the Stock Exchanges, socialist meetings, churches, revivalist gatherings and ecstatic sects, through love and hate, through the experience of passion in every form in his own body, he would reap richer stores of knowledge than text-books a foot thick could give him, and he will know how to doctor the sick with a real knowledge of the human soul. -- Carl Jung

Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.
一年中的夜晚与白天数量相同、持续时间一样长。即使快乐的生活也有其阴暗笔触,没有“悲哀”提供平衡,“愉快”一词就会失去意义。耐心镇静地接受世事变迁,是最好的处事之道。

I cannot love anyone if I hate myself. That is the reason why we feel so extremely uncomfortable in the presence of people who are noted for their special virtuousness, for they radiate an atmosphere of the torture they inflict on themselves. That is not a virtue but a vice.
恨自己就无法爱他人。这就是在面对因其极度高洁而闻名的人时,我们感觉极为不安的原因:他们带来自我折磨的氛围——一种邪恶而非德行。

Man needs difficulties; they are necessary for health.
人需要困扰,困扰是心理健康的必需之物。

Shrinking away from death is something unhealthy and abnormal which robs the second half of life of its purpose.

The greatest and most important problems of life are all fundamentally insoluble. They can never be solved but only outgrown.

The most intense conflicts, if overcome, leave behind a sense of security and calm that is not easily disturbed. It is just these intense conflicts and their conflagration which are needed to produce valuable and lasting results.
对最强烈冲突的克服,使我们获得一种稳定超然的安全与宁静感。要获得有益而持久的心理安全与宁静,所需要的正是这种强烈冲突的大暴发。

There is no coming to consciousness without pain.
没有痛苦,就没有意识的唤醒。

From the middle of life onward, only he remains vitally alive who is ready to die with life.
中年之后,只有已为告别人生做好准备的人,才能继续在生活中朝气蓬勃。

The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely.
最可怕的事情是完全接受自己。

A collection of a hundred great brains makes one big fathead.
集合起一百个伟大头脑,就会得到一个大傻瓜。

Here we must ask: Have I any religious experience and immediate relation to God, and hence that certainty which will keep me, as an individual, from dissolving in the crowd?
在此我们必须发问:我是否拥有任何宗教体验、拥有与上帝的直接关联,从而获得一种确然性,使我做为个体免于消融于群众?

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
潜意识如果没有进入意识,就会引导你的人生而成为你的命运。

Wholly unprepared, we embark upon the second half of life. Or are there perhaps colleges for forty-year-olds which prepare them for their coming life and its demands as the ordinary colleges introduce our young people to a knowledge of the world? No, thoroughly unprepared we take the step into the afternoon of life; worse still, we take this step with the false assumption that our truths and ideals will serve us as hitherto. But we cannot live the afternoon of life according to the programme of life's morning; for what was great in the morning will be little at evening, and what in the morning was true will at evening have become a lie.
我们完全手足无措地踏上生命的后半征程。普通大学把年轻人引入知识世界,什么学校能让四十几岁人为未来生活做好准备?没有这种学校,我们完全无备地踏入后半生;而更糟的是,我们假定现实和理想会一如既往地效忠于我们。但实际上,我们不能依照生命之晨,来度过生命之午后,因为晨时的伟大会成为傍晚时的琐碎,而晨时的真理会在傍晚变为谎言。

What is essential in a work of art is that it should rise far above the realm of personal life and speak to the spirit and heart of the poet as man to the spirit and heart of mankind.
艺术作品应当超越个人生活的天地、直面诗人的精神与内心深处,如同人直面人类的精神与内心。

It is, moreover, only in the state of complete abandonment and loneliness that we experience the helpful powers of our own natures.
而且,只有在完全的听天由命和孤独状态,我们才能体验到我们自身天性的积极力量。

The images of the unconscious place a great responsibility upon a man. Failure to understand them, or a shirking of ethical responsibility, deprives him of his wholeness and imposes a painful fragmentariness on his life.

The unconscious is the unwritten history of mankind from time unrecorded.
潜意识是未曾付诸文字的人类洪荒时代史。

Man's task is to become conscious of the contents that press upward from the unconscious.
人的任务,就是意识到从潜意识中努力向上涌出的内容。

The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul, opening into that cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness, and which will remain psyche no matter how far our ego-consciousness extends.
梦是开设在灵魂深处最隐蔽角落的小小隐秘窗口,它所通向的宇宙夜空是心灵性的,在自我-意识出现之前很久就已如此,而无论我们的自我-意识的疆界如何扩展,它将始终通向心灵的夜空。

Just as the body bears the traces of its phylogenetic development, so also does the human mind.

Psychoneurosis must be understood...... as the suffering of a soul which has not discovered its meaning.  But all creativeness in the realm of the spirit as well as every psychic advance of man arises from the suffering of the soul and the cause of suffering is spiritual stagnation or spiritual sterility.
必须把神经官能症 ...... 理解为仍未发现自身意义的灵魂的苦难。而精神王国中的所有创造性、以及人心灵的每一步提升,都是源于灵魂的苦难,苦难的原因则是精神的停滞或精神的荒芜。
      
The world of gods and spirits is truly 'nothing but' the collective unconscious inside me.
神与精神世界确实“只不过”是我们内在的集体潜意识。
      
The primordial image, or archetype, is a figure--be it a daemon, a human being, or a process--that constantly recurs in the course of history and appears wherever creative fantasy is freely expressed. Essentially, therefore, it is a mythological figure. . . . In each of these images there is a little piece of human psychology and human fate, a remnant of the joys and sorrows that have been repeated countless times in our ancestral history. . . . 原始表象或原型是一种形象——无论是魔鬼、人类、或一个过程的形象——它不断再现于历史长河中,在创造性幻想得以自由表达的地方出现。因而,它在本质上是一种神话形象。... 在每一个这些表象中,都存在有人类心理和人类命运的片段,它是在我们先祖的历史中无限次出现过的快乐和悲哀的遗迹。

The unsatisfied yearning of the artist reaches back to the primordial image in the unconscious which is best fitted to compensate the inadequacy and one-sidedness of the present.

Have the horrors of the World War done nothing to open our eyes, so that we still cannot see that the conscious mind is even more devilish and perverse than the naturalness of the unconscious?
难道即使世界大战的恐怖也无法使我们看到,意识心理会比自然的潜意识心理更加邪恶和不义?

The longing for light is the longing for consciousness.
对光明的渴望就是对意识的渴望。

The deeper 'layers' of the psyche lose their individual uniqueness as they retreat further and further into darkness. . . . they become increasingly collective until they are universalized and extinguished in the body's materiality. . . . Hence 'at bottom' the psyche is simply 'world.'
心灵的较深“层次”随着深入黑暗之地,而越来越失去其个体独特性。...... 它们越来越具有集体性,直至普遍化地消融于物质躯体。...... 因而“在其最底层”,心灵就是“世界”。

A collective problem, if not recognized as such, always appears as a personal problem.

Psychological insecurity . . . increases in proportion to social security.

Masses are always breeding grounds of psychic epidemics.
群众始终是精神时疫的滋生地。

The healthy man does not torture others - generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers.
健康的人不会虐待他人——施虐者常常曾为受虐者。

The word "belief" is a difficult thing for me. I don't believe. I must have a reason for a certain hypothesis. Either I know a thing, and then I know it - I don't need to believe it.
我难以理解“信念”一词。我不去相信。我必须为一种假设找到理由。我因理解而了解——我不需要“相信”。

The unconscious mind of man sees correctly even when conscious reason is blind and impotent.
即使在意识理性盲目无力时,人的潜意识心理仍能正确地理解。

Personality is the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncracy of a living being.

He who looks outside dreams, he who looks inside awakens.
