Abstract:In this study , content analysis is used to find how mass media
discuss mental illness and how it gives this word meaning. The samples are
reports on mental illness and are picked out from the biggest Chinese
news search engine “Baidu News”.The conclution is that reports on mental
illness are different from ordinary health reports. There are profound
differnces between ordinary reports and reports on World Mental Health
Day. We also find mass media tends to demonize people with mental
illness .Structural reflection about prevention and cure of mental
illness is inadequat in mass media.

美国学者Burgner. G .Cross、Wahl. O. F、Roth..R、Rose .D、Wilson. C 、Stuart. H等学者在对近十年来的纸质和电子媒体研究中发现,大众传媒是公众对于精神病患者和精神疾病相关知识的最主要来源。但是,不论在娱乐节目还是新闻报道中,媒体都倾向于对精神病患者进行负面的再现,给他们贴上暴力和犯罪的标签。而且,媒体的负面呈现对公众态度具有一定的涵化作用,使公众对精神病患者产生了不恰当的排斥、歧视和恐惧心理。
