Abstract:Objective:To study the difference in the clinical features between bipolar and unipolar depression. Method:Thirty-two patients with unipolar depression and 40 patients with bipolar depression were recruited for comparison of clinical features. Results:Anxiety and suicidal behaviour were more common in unipolar depression, whilst psychomotor retardation was more prevalent in bipolar depression. Antidepressant did significantly better than sulpiride in unipolar depression, but they were equally effective in bipolar depression. On the other hand, sulpiride had fewer side effects and less propensity to induce a manic-swing. Conclusion:Unipolar and bipolar depression differ in clinical features and therapeutic response to psychotropics. Sulpiride is especially useful in bipolar disorder.
